We’re looking for an experienced product manager to join our team at the Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science, University of Oxford, working on OpenSAFELY and our other products.

Applications close at 12 noon on Friday 6th November.

Who are we?

We are the Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science, at the University of Oxford, led by Professor Ben Goldacre.

We built OpenSAFELY, an open-source platform for secure clinical research. Conceived at the start of the COVID-19 crisis, it enables researchers to analyse health records at an unprecedented scale, while protecting patient privacy.

Our mission is to drive better use of data to improve people’s lives.

We’re a multidisciplinary team of software developers, researchers, clinicians, policy experts and others, combining different skills and perspectives to tackle important problems in health research.

Why join us?

  • Meaningful work. You’ll use your product management skills to help improve health research and ultimately people’s lives.
  • Interesting product challenges. Our work spans complex technical systems, diverse users and stakeholders, and opportunities to apply modern product management and discovery approaches.
  • Great colleagues. Our software teams are collaborative, supportive, thoughtful and kind. We value openness, learning and constructive challenge.
  • Flexible working. We support hybrid and remote working within the UK, alongside opportunities to spend time together in person.

What would you be working on?

You’ll be part of our product team, working closely with software engineers, researchers and colleagues from other disciplines to understand users’ needs, identify opportunities, make good product decisions and help teams deliver valuable outcomes.

There are lots of interesting challenges across our products and services: improving the experience of researchers using OpenSAFELY, developing better ways to make data available for research, and exploring new opportunities to extend the impact of our work.

We’re particularly interested in people with strong experience of modern product management and discovery techniques. Experience or interest in healthcare, data or research would be a bonus, but you don’t need to have worked in these fields before.

Who should apply?

We’re looking for experienced product managers, or people in similar roles, who enjoy understanding complex problems, working collaboratively and using evidence to make good decisions.

Don’t rule yourself out just because your experience doesn’t match every part of the job description.

People come to product management through different routes, and valuable experience can take many forms. If you think you could do this job well, we’d encourage you to apply, even if you’re unsure whether you meet every criterion. Think about how your experience, including transferable skills from other roles, demonstrates what we’re looking for.

We’re actively seeking to increase the diversity of our team and particularly welcome applications from people from backgrounds under-represented in technology.

How to apply

You can find the full job description and apply through the University of Oxford’s recruitment website:

A couple of important things to know:

  • Applications must be submitted through the University’s recruitment system. We can’t accept applications by email or through other routes.
  • Please address every selection criterion in your cover letter. This is particularly important, as we’ll use the evidence you provide to assess applications against the criteria in the job description. Give specific examples wherever possible, and don’t feel you need to restrict your cover letter to one or two pages - it can be as long as necessary to explain your relevant experience.
